COMMUNITY FACILITY SAVED BY PEOPLE POWER

PEOPLE POWER has been credited for saving a vital community building in Shipston—which would have been sold-off. Residents will now run it themselves.

The former Stratford-on-Avon District Council office, in Telegraph Street, has been saved for community use after the council’s cabinet agreed to support a plan proposed by the Shipston Town Management Partnership (STMP).

The decision means that a variety of community services—including those of the district council—can soon be offered again from the building.

The chairman of the partnership, Graham Williamson, said: “The power of the people has made this happen. The initial decision was to close it and that was the end of the story as far as the district council was concerned. However, the publicity campaign of the STMP and a lot of lobbying of the councillors has been sufficient to change their minds.”
